What's the big deal about National Signing Day?

Oh my gosh! Tomorrow is National Signing Day!! On this day, high school runners sign their National Letter of Intent to run Track & Field/Cross Country in college (and a few other sports like Football, Soccer, Field Hockey and Water Polo to be exact). In the school district I live in, National Signing Day is a big deal, with media coverage and parents and coaches and lots of people watching you sign on the dotted line. ESPN even has a full day of coverage of the football signings on ESPNU

The Social Runner Chick: It’s all about the Donuts

Have you noticed all the races the non-traditional, novelty races that are popping up? Let’s see – there’s The Color Run, The Hot Chocolate 15/5K, The Zombie Run, The Bad Prom, The Glow Run, Heroes vs. Villians…you get the idea. And sheesh these races aren’t cheap. Many of these races aren’t even timed – they are more about just having fun with your friends while you do a little running (or walking). It’s social running. ESPN.com had an interesting article about the non-traditional race

The Suckiness of IT Band Syndrome

Post half marathon, aside from motivation issues due to the cold weather, I’ve been plagued with IT band issues. For those not in the know, the iliotibial (IT) band is the ligament that runs along the outer thigh from the hip to the shin. It’s very painful if it gets tight or inflamed, and that’s what happens when you don’t stretch, like me. Or when you get old, like me. Ha! Speaking of old, I’ve been officially retired from Track & Field long enough to get inducted into the Hall of Fame at my

Not quite one and done

After six weeks of mostly solid training post-strained-hamstring recovery and I successfully completed my first half marathon. My main goal was to finish in under 2:00 and I DID IT!!! My stretch goal was to run under 1:45. With my training runs around 8 minute pace, it shouldn’t have been a stretch, but given my longest run was a ten miler, foremost in my mind at the start was to not go out too fast because thirteen miles was unchartered territory for me and a heck of a L-O-N-G way! Officially I

T-Minus Two Days

It's very hard in the beginning to understand that the whole idea is not to beat the other runners. Eventually you learn that the competition is against the little voice inside you that wants you to quit. ~ Dr. George Sheehan So about six months ago I was talked into doing this half marathon thing. Now I can’t believe it’s almost here!! My daughter asked if I was nervous and I had to admit, I do have butterflies swirling around in my belly when I start thinking about the race. I am by no means

A Different Kind of Debut

Well, it’s offiicial. This former half-miler who never ran over a six-mile long run in college or an eight-miler post-collegiately is running a half-marathon. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Savannah Half to be exact. Can you believe it? Neither can I. Especially given the fact that just over three months ago, I could barely run one-mile due to a hamstring injury that kept me sidelined for close to two-months. Finally in August I could run two – three miles a few times a week without too much pain. I still

Look What I Got for Christmas…

The watchband on my Timex broke at the end of October. Unfortunately, it’s one of those watchbands that require you to send it back to the manufacturer for repair. I had to do that with my Nike watch and they got it back to me super fast, but it’s an inconvenience nonetheless. So my husband asked what I wanted for Christmas and I said, a new running watch. I thought I’d find another Timex in my stocking. But nooooooo….. I got this… This image was downloaded from Amazon.com. Please see

What not to do on a treadmill

I tend to do a lot of runs on the treadmill since I have two kids who aren’t old enough to babysit themselves and I have to squeeze in workouts whenever I can. I’m the kind of runner that doesn’t mind the treadmill. I don’t get dizzy or disoriented. Plus, I really love being able to catch up on movies or television programs while getting in my run. Right now I’m watching “The Class” which was an Academy Award nominee for best Foreign Language Film in 2009. It’s in French with English subtitles

Fearless Friday featuring Olympian Carrie Tollefson

(Photo by Anthony Quintano)A couple weeks ago I had the pleasure of interviewing 2004 Olympian (and Villanova Alum) Carrie Tollefson. Unfortunately Carrie started Villanova the fall following my last semester, so we were never teammates. And that stinks because she’s the kind of athlete you want on your team - super fun, super enthusiastic, super supportive and super FAST. It’s not surprising that she’s frequently engaged to do motivational speaking and is a broadcast announcer for various
