This was supposed to be about inspiration…

So I like to take pictures. My family hates it. I’m the one at all events with a camera slung around her neck saying, “Hold it. Let me get a picture.” Followed by moans and groans and rumbling of discontent. My little guy has resorted to “ruining” every picture by making a funny face. Who knows how goofy our Christmas cards are going to look. A part of our Fall tradition is making a trek to the pumpkin farm in search of a “Great Pumpkin” of our own. Of course – I have to take tons of photos

What I’m Watching

I really need an extra hour in my day. I mean, it’s October and there are a ton of new fall television shows for me to get sucked into. Have you started watching any cool new shows this season? In years past, I couldn’t wait for the special TV Guide Fall Preview issue. I’d read the blurb about each show and circle with a highlighter which shows were “Must See.” Then I’d plan my life around which shows were on which nights. Can I tell you how happy I am about DVRs and being able to watch shows On

The Writer’s Voice

Do you all watch The Voice? Well I’m participating in an event called “The Writer’s Voice”. Check out the skinny on Brenda Drake’s blog. In following the instructions, I need to post my query blurb and first 250 words on my blog. Yikes!! It’s going to be out there – for the whole world to see. *Taking several deep breaths* Okay – here goes… Wish me luck! (I'd love to hear your thoughts. Please click on the comment link below.) QUERY BLURB: Seventeen-year-old senior, Kyra Siefert races toward two

A Good Reason for A Blog-cation

Going into this year I had the best intentions to write a blog post on a weekly (if not more often) basis. I had grand plans… a weekly post on music I love, including new-to-me artists and another on an interview with a fearless female athlete or another good role model for young women. And then she came along… an eight-week-old Portuguese Water Dog we named Fergie. I’ve never owned a puppy and boy is she a lot of work. But she’s soooo dag on cute!! Between stalking her to make sure she doesn’t

Words to Inspire

I have a motto about blogging, if you don’t have something interesting to say – Don’t. So I haven’t. But today I was in need of a little bit of inspiration or maybe motivation and happened upon these quotes I hope you’ll enjoy. They are relatable to the inner competitor (and author) in all of us. Perhaps the single most important element in mastering the techniques and tactics of racing is experience. But once you have the fundamentals, acquiring the experience is a matter of time. ~Greg LeMond

The Fit Runner and…Writer

When I competed in college and after, when I trained for the Olympics, I logged of all my mileage and workouts. It was a great way to see how my training changed month to month, and year to year, as my fitness level increased. I also tracked my PBs or personal bests. This is my actual training log from February 12 – February 18 when I was training for the Olympics. At the start of this particular week, I was in Maebashi, Japan after competing in an IAAF indoor track meet. Since you might not be

The Story of Music

I am one of those people that loves a song more after I hear the words. I write to music and depending on the type of scene I’m writing, prefer different tuneage. For me, I connect best with songs that have a deeper meaning. A song that makes you feel the music in a deep heart-and-soul-ache-make-you-want-to-cry sort of way. The song might not even be a sad song, it’s just the intensity of the emotion and the story the artist is able to convey with their words or arrangement of the music. Even an

On location in NYC

Last weekend I went to NYC for my sister’s baby shower. Of course my visit coincided with the arrival of frigid temperatures. I love navigating NYC on foot, but with an artic blast, not so pleasant. Needless to say, it was still a great trip. How can a trip to NYC, not be great? Especially when it involves visiting family, making new friends, and research for an upcoming project. So I can make the sensory details accurate, I took countless pictures and pages of notes, much to my daughter’s

The Scots Way to Ring in the New Year

In Scotland, they celebrate New Year’s with Hogmanay. Traditionally, Hogmanay was a fire celebration commemorating the Winter Solstice. Because I'm a dictionary nerd, I'll share with you the following definition from The Free Dictionary: Hogmanay [ˌhɒgməˈneɪ] n a. New Year's Eve in Scotland b. (as modifier) a Hogmanay party See also first-foot And if you don’t like the pronunciation guide, it’s pronounced Hog – Many. Like lots of hogs. Hog – Many. Got it? Moving on… Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital
